  1. Let the henna dry thoroughly – this could take around 30 minutes to 1 hour before its dry enough that you don’t have to worry about it smudging.
  1. Leave the henna on for as long as possible – the longer you leave it the darker the colour will develop. Keep on for a minimum of 1 hour, and if possible keep on overnight for best results.
  1. Use a lemon sugar spray sealant – just a little, do not over saturate (dissolve 3 tsp of sugar in 3 tbsp of bottled or fresh lemon juice to create a syrup like consistency).
  1. Warm the area – use steam (safely!) or a hairdryer.
  1. Removing the dry paste – peel or rub off gently with your fingers, or use olive oil or lemon juice to assist the process.
  1. Avoid water for the first day –use a henna balm or a natural vegetable oil to rub over the stain before you do the washing up, bathe or go swimming. (do not use baby oil or Vaseline). This acts as a protective barrier.
  1. Avoid shaving over the area – shaving removes layers of skin so you may want to shave around it or not at all to keep the henna stain looking its best.
