How to choose the right henna powder

How to choose the right henna powder

There are a few things that are a must when choosing any henna powder:

  • Fresh. You must always buy fresh henna powder. If you want a great stain, don’t just grab henna off the shelf (as you don’t know how long it may have been sitting there) Even from crop to crop you will notice that the freshest henna powder gives the best stain results.
  • Body Art Quality. This means that the henna powder is the best quality since they take the leaves from the top of the plant with the most dye content. It also means that it is 100% pure and natural. This term is usually used to describe henna that is also used for body art.
  • Finely Sifted. None of that dirt, grit, sand, nor sticks help with getting a great staining henna paste. Even if you try to sift it yourself, you lose most of the henna powder you purchased.
  • Pure. Must contain no pesticides or chemicals. No PPD nor any other powders or ingredients. Only get 100% pure henna powder.

Hennacat’s Cream Superior Rajasthani Henna Powder

Currently my personal favourite for body art, this henna powder has a high dye content but with a superb light yet stringy consistency more in keeping with Jamila henna powder. When I first mixed up this henna I wanted to eat it – it was just like whipped chocolate cream – yummy! It smelt good enough to eat as well, but past experience of accidently getting henna in my mouth gave me enough self control not to go down that road! Instead I just enjoyed stirring this fluffy beauty and calculated how quickly I could get it on to some skin for testing. Then I realised that what I really wanted to do was put it straight on my hair so I mixed another batch straight away…

  • Henna paste made with Hennacat’s Cream stays put, and doesn’t ‘melt’ – this means that you can do intricate mehndi with a better feeling of control and confidence.
  • Although stringy, this henna has a much more stable consistency than other rajasthani hennas which can be very ‘sticky’ or ‘elastic’.
  • The light, fine texture means it rinses out of hair like a dream – perfect for even the most fragile hair.
  • It has a consistently high dye content at the high end of what is currently available

100g is enough henna to dye shoulder length hair; to produce around 100 small / medium henna tattoos; or to provide full bridal mehndi for 2 to 3 brides (depending on complexity and size of designs).

Yemen Henna Powder

It is with great regret that our Yemen henna is now out of stock, and I cannot give an expected date for when it will be back in stock. All my friends and suppliers in Yemen are experiencing huge difficulties and crisis as a result of the war and violence in the country. The main ports (including the beautiful city of Sana’a) and transport hubs are affected, as well as the roads, and as you can imagine survival and safety is the priority. It is impossible for henna to be processed and shipped at the moment.

As soon as I can, I will have the henna available, but it may be a while. In the meantime, the premium organic rajasthani henna is an excellent alternative.
